In Memory of Jacob Krachmalnick, Deceased August 31, 2001

Aside from being the concertmaster of the SF Symphony from 1964-1970 Jacob Krachmalnick was a wonderful chamber musician. I first met him as a youngster in 1964 at the Sun Valley, Idaho Chamber Music Camp, which was co-sponsored by the SF Conservatory of Music which I was attending. Krachmalnick was the first violinist in all the chamber music concerts.

Aside from the excitement of being away from home, I remember the thrill of hearing the beauty of Schubert's string quintet and being mesmerized by the exotic sounds of Ravel's string quartet. His soulful and eloquent performance of the Brahms D minor violin sonata was transfixing. For six more weeks I heard, for the first time, some of the great string quartets and piano trios of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms, impressions and sounds that shaped and influenced the rest of my musical life. To his memory I will always be grateful.
