In response to: "A History Lesson" (7/18/06)

Thank you, Robert Commanday, for the homage to the two most influential conductors in my life, Sandor Salgo and Pierre Monteux. I was a teenage usher at S.F. Symphony concerts during Monteux's reign, and so he was my first guide to classical music. I remember being swept away by his Brahms Fourth. I have heard Salgo as much as any other conductor, at Stanford and Carmel. His Bach, Mozart, and Bartók rush to mind. I also have been enriched by his wise and sensitive lectures, at Stanford and at my congregation in Palo Alto.

In response to: "FM Ostinato" in Music News (7/25/06)

I've just read Janos Gereben's column about the dearth of classical music (especially vocal) on public radio in the Bay Area. We have a huge audience for all kinds of classical music here, and yet. ... What pressure can be brought to KQED especially? He presented the facts — what about the solution?

Last year I was in Ashland, Ore., population about 20,000. They have several public classical stations. If KXPR in Sacramento can also broadcast in Groveland, and if KQED can broadcast in Sacramento, why can't we get KXPR here — they have lots of opera and other classical music, plus they have all the talk shows. What would that take? I'd love to hear more on this subject.
