In response to: "Preconcert Enlightenment" (8/1/06)

Hats off to Robert Moon and his fine description of excellence in concert-collateral presentations! I agree, and I have mentioned more than once in my own reviews that those who want to add information to the music should put "the same level of artistic and financial resources ... into preconcert education as they put into the concerts themselves."

Let us hope that others will adopt the best practices now displayed at Music@Menlo, the S.F. Opera, and other enlightened organizations. Simply holding an unprepared preconcert interview with participants won't hack it any more.

Excellent article! Bob Moon's writing struck me as a wonderful invitation to a gourmet meal of music. I enjoyed every bite.

In response to: "Farewell to Our Man of Music" (7/25/06)

Thank you, Mr. Commanday, for writing such a touching and heartfelt farewell to Mr. Schwabacher. It must have seemed nearly impossible to sum up such a man and such a career, but I think no one could have done it as well as you did. I wanted to write something from a student's perspective, but words simply don't come easily. Instead, I'll rely upon writers like you to eulogize beautifully. As for myself, I'll diligently try my best to sing the way he taught me. His legacy will live on in so many of us. Collectively, we all feel the loss of his passing and remember the wonderful gifts that he gave to us to pass on. I shall never forget him and will miss him dearly.

How I did enjoy Robert Commanday's article on James Schwabacher Jr. The only real contact I had with him was at the East Bay Opera League's competition for singers, and a luncheon at the Ebell Club overlooking Lake Merritt. He was a good judge, and it was so wonderful meeting such a famous musician. Thank you.
