Classical Music on the Air

In "Broadcast News", Sept. 5, 2006: Mr. Gereben listed some stations in Northern California that broadcast classical music. Regarding KXPR (from SactoState) at 90.9 FM until this week, and now at 88.9 — and their sibling KXSR in Groveland-Sonora at 91.7 FM — these guys broadcast classical music about 15 hours per day, five days per week. They broadcast the Metroplitan Opera live, they broadcast wonderful folk music shows and Broadway stuff on weekends, and in between yet more classical music. They can be heard on the Internet at capradio.org; we cannot get the FM signal on this side of Mt Diablo. Their stuff is just wonderful.

Operatic Changes?

Regarding "From Bay to Bayreuth and Back", Sept. 5, 2006: Thank you, Janos Gerenben, for quoting Terri Stuart's appraisal of the ghastly "director's opera" that has afflicted productions worldwide for years. Let us hope that the Germans indeed have finally tired of such trash and that we soon will be spared further such interpretations. Can we hope that the omnipresent trench coats, fascist themes, explicit sexuality, grotesque settings, and obscene and out-of-context "shocking" scenes are soon to be no longer fashionable?
