I'm so pleased that you laid out San Francisco Opera's broadcast history in such detail, along with the current paltry state of affairs regarding classical music on local radio stations.
We won the 1980 George Foster Peabody Broadcasting Award, and I say "we" because I had been the Producer of the broadcasts from 1972-82. Although the award was given to the opera company, I took a fair amount of pleasure, if not actual credit, for this recognition since as Producer I was responsible for continuity, intermission features, station relations, contact with sponsors, etc. everything BUT the performances. I also produced the 1985 Ring broadcasts and the 1987 season of taped operas that Terry presented as his broadcast valedictory.
Thanks for shedding so much light on the cultural scene! I share your hope that David Gockley will "get the company back on the air in short order."

I felt it prudent to write and let you know that the Chorus has attempted to negotiate a "media guarantee" fee to facilitate radio and television broadcasts as part of the past two contract negotiations. Our proposals have been based on the broadcast fee agreement in place between the Opera and the Orchestra. On each occasion, the proposition was vetoed by Management. The members of the Chorus would like nothing better than to see the San Francisco Opera on the airwaves again and will continue to work toward that end in our upcoming negotiating sessions.
Sincerely,
