In Bach's rarely performed early version of the world's greatest passion setting, the dramatic narrative is heightened by the intensity of its orchestration that renders the immediacy of the passion story in finely honed detail. This first version manuscript – handed down to us via Bach's principal assistant (and son-in-law) Johann Christoph Altnickol – transparently reveals in unclouded relief the exact proportions of Bach's forces. These performances will feature the use of one of Bach's favorite keyboard instruments, the Lautenwerk or lute-harpsichord.
