Harrison Birtwistle, Secret Theatre
Ivan Fedele, La Chute de la Maison Usher
Join Berkeley’s “dream team of local musicians” (N.Y. Times) as they explore musical drama in two rarely-heard masterpieces from the late 20th century.
It is hours after midnight now, a flute signals
Far off; we mount the stage as though at random
Boldly ring down the curtain, then dance out our love. (Secret Theater, Robert Graves)
Birtwistle’s dream-like journey over a landscape of strange fascination is brought to dramatic life by the players of Eco Ensemble. Ivan Fedele’s brilliantly colorful score accompanies a screening of the 1928 Jean Epstein film of Poe’s classic gothic horror tale. David Milnes conducts an all-star cast of Bay Area new music luminaries.
