Kirill Gerstein, who makes his Cal Performances debut, studied classical repertoire as a child and then, as a young teen, attended Berklee College to concentrate on jazz. He ultimately returned to classical music, a decision applauded by audiences and critics alike many times over, most recently when he received the Gilmore Artist Award in 2010, given only once every four years to a pianist of “broad and profound musicianship.”
