Cappella Romana Vocal Ensemble 20th Anniversary Concert: Hail, Heavenly Ladder!

Cappella Romana returns to San Francisco 20 years after its founding there for a concert of Greek Orthodox chant and choral works, Saturday, March 26, at 7:00 pm, at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation (245 Valencia St, San Francisco). This event of Hellenic Cultural Week 2011 will feature Medieval Byzantine music by Kassianë and Gazes and sacred works by Frank Desby, Tikey Zes, Theodore Bogdanos, Steve Cardiasmenos, Greek composers Nikolaos Mantzaros and Mihalis Adamis, and composer and priest of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Father Ivan Moody. The program will feature the first movement of Father Ivan Moody’s landmark setting of The Akáthistos Hymn, praised by Gramophone as “music of purity and radiance.” Admission to the concert is by suggested donation of $25. This concert is being underwritten by the Elios Society, whose mission is to preserve and promote the spirit, values and ideals of Hellenic Culture and heritage. Thanks to this support, all proceeds from the concert will support the Annunciation Cathedral Building Fund. Additional support comes from the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco, Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation and its chapter of Philoptochos, the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University, Theodore and Evangelia Laliotis and Mark and Brigid Kathleen Powell. Media Sponsors are the Hellenic Journal and the Hellenic Federation of Northern California. Cappella Romana was founded in 1991 by Greek American Dr. Alexander Lingas, who is a Senior Lecturer in Music at City University in London, England, and one of the world’s leading scholar-performers of Byzantine and Orthodox music. Among his current projects is a general introduction to Byzantine Chant for Yale University Press. He is the 2010 recipient of the Saint Romanos the Melodist Medallion, awarded for exemplary national contributions to church music in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Following this concert, Dr. Lingas and the ensemble will begin work with Stanford University on a new research project on the acoustics of Byzantine churches.
