Heralded as “divinely gifted” and “intoxicating” by The New York Times, Shantala Shivalingappa breathes life into kuchipudi, the 2,000-year-old Indian dance style. Shivalingappa, born in India and raised in Paris, captivates with the vibrant, precise storytelling embodied in her performances, and “erases cultural boundaries with her lightness, wit and musicality” (The New Yorker). Gamaka, a solo piece performed to live musical accompaniment, explores the primal power of vibrations in sound and movement: “In dance, the elements of movement, rhythm, sound, melody and poetry come together as vibrations that resonate,” says Shivalingappa, “calling each other, playing, escaping, mingling, deviating, forming patterns of great beauty and harmony.”
