Morrison Artists Series Master Class | Morrison Artists Series: Chanticleer

Chanticleer Education Director Ben Johns works with the SF State Chamber Singers, the top choral ensemble in the University’s School of Music and Dance.

Chanticleer, the Grammy-winning and San Francisco-based chorus, is “the world’s reigning male chorus,” the New Yorker writes, and was named Musical America’s 2008 Ensemble of the Year. Chanticleer makes appearances at legendary concert halls worldwide on a regular basis. The ensemble is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its 12 male voices ranging from countertenor to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. Named for the “clear-singing” rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis Botto, who sang in the ensemble until 1989 and served as artistic director until his death in 1997.

Bringing Bay Area audiences the world’s finest chamber music since 1955, the Morrison Artists Series at San Francisco State University is “indispensable,” the San Francisco Chronicle writes. Led by Artistic Director Richard Festinger, the series presents free performances each year by acclaimed ensembles.
