Shortly after winning the 2005 BBC Singer of the World Competition, Nicole Cabell recorded her debut recital for Universal Classics. Around the same time, Gramophone magazine put her image on their cover, declaring her one of three up-and-coming sopranos to look out for. Yet Cabell was honest in stating that her voice was still in flux, and her exact fach TBD. Since then she has played it safe, recording the role of Musetta in DG’s recent La Bohème, in the company of Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villázon (Universal’s answer to EMI’s Gheorghiu/Alagna love couple). Leave it to the visionary Robert Cole to take his leave of Cal Performances by enabling us to discover if Cabell is really one of the soprano hopes of the so-in-need-of-hope early 21st century.
