Noël Coward's BITTER SWEET in Concert

Lamplighters Music Theatre

Lamplighters Music Theatre Noël Coward's BITTER SWEET in Concert

Written in 1929, BITTER SWEET is pure Noël Coward – he wrote the book, lyrics and music, and directed the first production. This gorgeous, rarely-performed operetta tells the story of Sari Linden, a young English singer who elopes with her voice teacher and achieves fame by singing the songs he composes – but at a terrible price.

JANE ERWIN HAMMETT plays the role of a lifetime with BAKER PEEPLES as her lover. Co-starring JENNIFER ASHWORTH and WILLIAM NEELY with a supporting cast of some of the Lamplighters’ finest singers, and accompanied by the Savoy Salon Orchestra conducted by Monroe Kanouse. This world premiere of the concert version of Bitter Sweet by Coward scholar Barry Day, directed by Barbara Heroux, is the opening night performance for the Museum of Performance & Design’s exhibition STAR QUALITY: The World of Noël Coward. Don’t miss your only chance to see this rare classic, not presented in San Francisco since 1951. One performance only!

Great songs include -

I’ll See You Again . . .
If Love Were All . . .
Kiss Me . . .

The word “operetta” sounds like what it is: opera lite. The story may be tragic but the treatment will be light, if you can imagine that. You are not invited to dwell long in tragedy; neither are you permitted to escape from the sadness — not altogether. More »
