Music For A Summer Night

San Francisco Choral Society

San Francisco Choral Society Music For A Summer Night

The San Francisco Choral Society, under the artistic direction of Robert Geary, will perform Music For A Summer Night featuring the work of Ludwig van Beethoven and Benjamin Britten. The 150 voice chorus, along with six talented soloists and the California Chamber Symphony will perform Beethoven's brilliant Mass in C Major, his wonderful Choral Fantasy and Britten's classic Rejoice in the Lamb in two performances at the acoustically rich Calvary Presbyterian Church, 2515 Fillmore Street in San Francisco's Pacific Heights.

The Mass in C Major, according to Beethoven himself, forged new boundaries for the time. It was unlike most any had ever heard. The work was considered, shocking, intense, and impassioned, with high religious fervor.

The Choral Fantasy creates a dialogue, if you will, between the piano and orchestra, and then the chorus is introduced. Pianist and Choral Society Assistant Conductor Bryan Baker will play the piano in this piece.

Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb is based on the poetry of the 18th century poet Christopher Smart who penned the text while in an asylum. Britten, in this piece captures the delightful religious spirit along with the poem's half mad spirit. Organist Rodney Gehrke will accompany.
