Vladimir Jurowski leads the San Francisco Symphony (SFS), SFS Chorus, mezzo-soprano Elena Zaremba, and baritone Andrey Breus in the US premiere of Atovmyan’s arrangement of Prokofiev’s Ivan the Terrible at Davies Symphony Hall on October 18, 19 and 20 at 8:00pm. These concerts, Jurowksi’s debut performances with the Orchestra, also include Khatia Buniatishvili performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
Russian conductor Vladimir Jurowski is the Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He also holds the titles of Principal Artist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Artistic Director of the Russian State Academic Symphony Orchestra. Jurowski, who makes his SFS debut in these performances, has previously conducted the Russian National Orchestra at Davies Symphony Hall.
Russian mezzo-soprano Elena Zaremba began her career as a member of the Bolshoi Theatre and has since sung on the opera stages of New York, San Francisco, Florence, Covent Garden, and Berlin. She has frequently collaborated with Placido Domingo, including at the celebration of his 60th birthday at the Metropolitan Opera, performing Il Trovatore conducted by James Levine. These are her debut performances with the SFS.
Andrey Breus is a principal with Moscow Novaya Opera and a guest soloist with Bolshoi Opera and Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Opera. With Vladimir Jurowski, who conducts these performances, Breus participated in the world premiere of Atovmyan’s arrangement of Prokofiev’s Ivan the Terrible. These are his first performances with the SFS.
Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili last performed with the SFS in performances of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major in January 2012. This month she releases a new recording of masterworks by Chopin on the Sony label. This past July, she was named by the Deutsche Phono-Akademie as Echo Klassik’s ”Best Newcomer of the Year (Piano)” for her debut recording, of music by Liszt.
