This program is rich in the vivid impressionism of Debussy. One of his most alluring works is sung by America’s regal soprano, Renée Fleming. “I was destined for a sailor’s life,” Debussy confided, “and it was only quite by chance that fate led me in another direction.” Nonetheless, he retained a “passionate love” for the sea, and his shimmering, crashing depiction of it has dazzled listeners for more than a century. The intriguing Jeux was his final work for orchestra.
