Mendelssohn’s vivacious first symphony was written at the sunrise of his career—he was but 15 when he composed the work, an imaginative, energetic, and totally delightful creation. By contrast, Richard Strauss was in the sunset of his compositional life when he produced the Oboe Concerto. But what a gloriously radiant sunset it is. SFS Principal Oboe William Bennett does the honors in the concerto.
The Thursday Matinee concerts are endowed by a gift in memory of Rhoda Goldman.
