Rachmaninoff played the piano at the premiere of his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The work features two dozen variations on one of Paganini’s Caprices. This variation set starts out with a variation rather than the theme. Rachmaninoff also famously quotes the eerie Dies Irae melody. “[The Mariinsky Orchestra’s] performance was also characteristically Gergievian in its drive to burst through the prissy, buttoned-up corsets that bind classical music, with the aim of releasing a dangerous vitality.”—The New York Times
