Santa Rosa Symphony music director Bruno Ferrandis has put together an exhilarating program combination for Valentine’s weekend, February 11, 12 and 13 at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. SRS principal horn player Darby Hinshaw steps out from the orchestra’s brass section to perform a rich and satisfying horn concerto written by Mozart at the height of his powers. Hinshaw has performed with the Stockton, Marin and San Francisco symphonies and is currently also utility horn player at the San Diego Symphony.
The concert begins with Hold That Thought by a former colleague of Maestro Ferrandis and co-director of the UC Berkeley Center for New Music and Audio Technologies, composer Edmund Campion. In this piece, a keyboardist controls a real-time, computer-based synthesis engine which generates sound based on models closely linked to the physics of string instruments. As Ferrandis noted, “The computer and orchestra are interacting and performing together.” Campion will be the Symphony’s composer-in-residence in the 2012-2013 season.
The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s passionately expressive Symphony No. 5. When first released, one critic wrote: “It is a striking work that takes a prominent place not only among the composer’s output but among Russian works in general...the entire symphony seems to spring from some dark spiritual experience.”
Bruno Ferrandis will be joined by composer Edmund Campion for one or more of the pre-concert “Conversations with the Conductor” – beginning one hour before each performance. The talk is followed by Q & A. This is an open-seating event free to ticket holders.
