A self-taught composer, performer and poet, Jaap Blonk is unique for his powerful stage presence and almost childlike freedom in improvisation, combined with a keen grasp of structure. He has performed in many European countries, as well as in the U.S. and Canada, Indonesia, Japan, South Africa and Latin America.
Blonk started to work with electronics in 2000, at first using samples of his own voice, then extending to include pure sound synthesis as well. A renewed interest in mathematics in 2006 made Blonk start researching the possibilities of algorithmic composition for creating music, visual animation and poetry.
Besides working as a soloist, Block has collaborated with many musicians and ensembles in contemporary and improvised music, including Maja Ratkje, Mats Gustafsson, Nicolas Collins, Joan La Barbara, The Ex, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and the Ebony Band. He premiered several compositions by the German composer Carola Bauckholt, including a piece for voice and orchestra. The Donaueschinger Musiktage commissioned a solo voice piece in 2002. Blonk’s work for radio and television includes several commissioned radio plays.
The SF State School of Music and Dance opens its Concert Music course to the public with engaging recitals featuring student, faculty and guest performances. Enjoy the sounds and sights by solo artists and ensembles in jazz, world, chamber music, strings, choral music, dance and more.
