Lassus wrote two strongly contrasting cycles of nine lessons from the Book of Job for use in the nighttime service of Matins for the Dead, where they alternated with the chanted psalms, antiphons and responsories. Although the starker setting did not appear in print until the death of his patron Albrecht V of Bavaria in 1582, like the 1565 set it may well date from after the sudden deaths of both of his parents in 1554; the duke was proud of his monopoly on music reserved for his private use.
