Percussion, reimagined: Colin Currie, a restless and charismatic virtuoso, brings his battery of instruments front, center, and all around the stage in service of a new concerto by UK compatriot Sally Beamish. Commissioned by Lively Arts for Currie and the Stanford Philharmonia, Beamish’s Dance Variations is complemented by a half program of solo works, all making full use of Currie’s abundant intellect and musicality. In the Financial Times’ (USA) words: “In his hands, the marimba coos and a drum set thunders.”
