Çudamani, one of Bali’s most vibrant community arts groups, presents Bamboo to Bronze, a visually arresting, evening-length music, theater, and dance work for two dozen performers that draws on traditional and contemporary Indonesian art forms. Formed by a family of virtuosic young musicians on the island of Bali, Çudamani performs ancient court music and ritual gamelan alongside works by contemporary Balinese choreographers, infusing folkloric repertoire with fresh dynamism and energy. An orchestra of metallic mallet instruments and bamboo wind instruments creates a shimmering, pulsing score for the precise, often explosive choreography of the dancers. Female vocalists outfitted in stunning gold and brocade costumes sing haunting modal melodies, their intricate wrist and eye movements in perfect unison with the music. Men play raucous percussion patterns on gongs and bells, and chant layered, infectious rhythms to propel the drama.
