"Passionate intensity…has long been [the St. Lawrence's] hallmark.” —The New York Times

The St. Lawrence String Quartet, Stanford University’s treasured ensemble in residence, launches the first of three Sunday performances (with other bonus events throughout the season!) with the work of a composer the quartet plays with fierce musicality and intelligence: Franz Joseph Haydn. The energetic, dancelike quartet in C Major, Op. 74, No. 1 is part of the “Apponyi” series, dedicated to Haydn’s friend Count Anton Apponyi, who paid the composer for exclusive performing rights in Vienna to a series of quartets. San Francisco–based pianist Stephen Prutsman, one of the SLSQ’s favorite collaborators and an acclaimed performer, composer, and arts ambassador, joins for two works that make ample use of his great virtuosity and instincts: Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 1 and Elgar’s Piano Quartet in A minor.
