The Women’s Antique Vocal Ensemble (WAVE), directed by Cindy Beitmen, will perform a series of benefit concerts in California missions for the purpose of raising money for the continued restoration of these buildings, which are an important part of California's history.
The concerts will include Renaissance and Baroque music from New Spain (Latin America), which provided a basis for the music composed and performed in the California missions. Composers include Cristóbal de Morales, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Francisco Guerrero, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Sebastián Durón, José de Torres, Francisco Capillas, Francisco Escalada, Hernando Franco, Juan Gutierrez de Padilla, Juan Garcia Zéspedes, and Juan de Araujo. Guest instrumentalists include Joyce Johnson-Hamilton, cornetto & trumpet; Shirley Hunt, viola da gamba; Howard Kadis, lute & archlute; Mary Prout, viola da gamba; Aaron Westman, violin, viola.
