Michael Cooper reported on the startling lack of women choreographers presented by major companies in The New York Times on June 26. His piece titled “Breaking the Glass Slipper: Where Are the Female Choreographers?” notes that New York City Ballet presented 58 ballets this past season and not one was by a woman. This lack of representation stands in stark contrast to the popular perception that dance, and ballet in particular, is a field dominated by female artists. George Balanchine’s declaration that “Ballet is Woman” notwithstanding, women choreographers appear to be dramatically far from the limelight in major companies in the 21st century.
