Music Re-Creation at Mills College

Mills College Dept of Music
By Michael Zwiebach

When you combine a lot of great Bay Area instrumentalists with a lot of Bay Area institutions of higher learning, you wind up with way more concerts than you can conceivably get to. But if you like your J.S. Bach, here's one you might want to consider. Music's Re-Creation — the ensemble's name was inspired by Jean-Marie Leclair's Recreation de Musique (1736), and John Playford's Musick's Recreation on the Viol (1682) — was founded in 1979 and consists of Philharmonia Baroque violinist Carla Moore, celebrated viola da gambist John Dornenburg, plus Louise Carslake on flute and Lorna Peters on harpsichord. This weekend, they'll do two fantastic Bach trio sonatas and a set of French music that complements the Bach. And since they're performing at Mills College, the price is only $10-$15, and the 4 p.m. start guarantees that you'll be home by dinner time.

Michael Zwiebach is the senior editor/ content manager for SFCV. He assigns all articles and content, manages the writing staff and does editing. A member of SFCV from the beginning, Michael holds a Ph.D. in music history from the University of California, Berkeley.
