Soloists of New Century

New Century Chamber Orchestra
By Michael Zwiebach

New Century Chamber OrchestraBeginning tomorrow, and through the weekend, the powerhouse New Century Chamber Orchestra continues to open its repertoire with both new music and great arrangements. In this concert, we are offered NCCO's expanded view of 18th-century music, beginning with the evergreen "Entrance of the Queen of Sheba," from Handel's Solomon. The new/old piece on the concert is by the orchestra's featured composer, Lera Auerbach: her Sogno di Stabat Mater is a response to Giovanni Pergolesi's wonderful, 18th-century choral piece. Clarice Assad, also a favorite composer at NCCO, adds a suite based on themes by J.S. Bach. And finally, the orchestra dips into the un-recomposed 18th Century with Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.

Michael Zwiebach is the senior editor/ content manager for SFCV. He assigns all articles and content, manages the writing staff and does editing. A member of SFCV from the beginning, Michael holds a Ph.D. in music history from the University of California, Berkeley.
