Merola Opera Program Summer Plans

Janos Gereben on April 9, 2013

Merola's 2013 summer season includes Britten's The Rape of Lucretia and Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro in venues new to the program: 600-seat Everett Middle School Auditorium and 1,700-seat Nourse Theater, in addition to Yerba Buena Gardens and the War Memorial Opera House.

Changes have been necessitated by the closure of Herbst Theatre for renovation; Everett has 200 more seats than the previously used Cowell Theater.

  • The Rape of Lucretia opens the season on July 11 and 13 in Everett, directed by Peter Kazaras and conducted by Mark Morash.
  • The annual Schwabacher Summer Concert will also take place in the school, on July 18, and repeated in a free performance at Yerba Buena on July 20.
  • The Mozart opera is scheduled for Aug. 1 and 3, in Everett Auditorium, directed by Robin Guarino and conducted by Xian Zhang.
  • John DeMain conducts the annual Merola Grand Finale on Aug. 17 on the main stage of War Memorial Opera House.
  • Master classes and special events throughout the season will take place in Nourse.
