The Afro-Cuban rhythm the cáscara, means “shell” in Spanish, and is played on the shell or outside of the timbales. Omar Ledezma Jr., educator at the Community Music Center in San Francisco, and GRAMMY nominee singer and percussionist, demonstrates the rhythm. — Lisa Petrie
