Four new works originally scheduled to premiere last spring were delayed by COVID-19 restrictions until now. The collaborations between UC Davis doctoral music composition students and Master of Fine Arts students in creative writing will stream in an online concert titled New Words and New Music With Voice on Feb 4. The free, prerecorded concert will be shown on the Department of Music YouTube channel and available for viewing after its premiere.

The concert features music, theater, and dance students performing, as well as music professor and violist Kurt Rohde and guest pianist Kate Campbell.

The new works are:

  • Earrings, a musical drama, with libretto by Mangai Arumugam and music by Emily Joy Sullivan

  • Spaceman / Watchman for soprano, readers and piano, with words by Sawyer Elms and Jordan Dahlen and music by Trey Makler

  • Geographies I for soprano and piano, with music by Daniel Godsil, music and words by Jennifer Soong

  • can you hear me? for solo voice, with words by Anna Tuchin and music by Orkun Akyol

A project from a previous collaboration by Ryan Suleiman, music, and Cristina Fríes, creative writing, had productions by West Edge Opera in San Francisco and Rogue Music Project in Sacramento in early 2020. Those two UC Davis alumni are also finalist in the current West Edge Aperture program.
