This recording features two pieces for cello by Shostakovich, written 25 years apart. The insolent Sonata for Cello and Piano Op. 40 of 1934 — contemporary with Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, the opera soon to plunge its composer into disgrace with Stalin — was answered in 1959 by the bitter self-questioning of the Cello Concerto which ends with a wicked caricature of joy.

Harmonia Mundi is offering the track "Allegro" from Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1 for SFCV readers to download and enjoy.

Villa-Lobos’ "War" and "Victory" Symphonies were commissioned by the Brazilian government following the end of the country’s involvement in World War I. Using very large orchestral forces, the two works use a variety of unusual and evocative effects, such as the collage of fragments of the Brazilian national anthem and La Marseillaise in the ‘Battle’ movement of the Third Symphony. This recording is performed by the São Paulo Symphony conducted by Isaac Karabtchevsky.

Seattle Symphony’s first holiday album embraces works composed specifically for Christmas. Music Director Gerard Schwarz asked two composers, the Symphony’s Composer in Residence Samuel Jones and Seattle Symphony Principal Oboe Ben Hausmann, to “make the music their own” by scoring several of the pieces to retain the simplicity of these well-known Christmas and concert works. Schwarz also arranged and edited several of the pieces.

Rossini's gift for comic and tragic forms was matched by an equal appreciation for characterization, qualities that are always evident in his overtures. La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) is perhaps the most famous, but in Otello he reveals his more complex turns of phrase. The overture for Elisabetta, Regina d’Inghilterra was used again a year later by Rossini for Il barbiere di Siviglia. These recordings feature the Prague Philharmonic Choir and Prague Sinfonia Orchestra conducted by Christian Benda. This is the first of four discs of the complete Rossini Overtures.

Symphonie Fantastique was composed while Hector Berlioz was suffering an intense and unreciprocated passion for the Irish actress Harriet Smithson. Its autobiographical tale describes a young musician’s opium-poisoned nightmares of jealous despair following the murder of his beloved. Berlioz wrote a second movement cornet solo into a subsequent revision of the score, here included as an optional extra. This recording is conducted by Leonard Slatkin.
