ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Erica Ward—Violin
A native of Portland, Oregon, violinist Erica Ward received her B.M. from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and her M.M. from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where her principal teachers were Camilla Wicks, Wei He, and Paul Kantor. Erica is Director and Resident Teaching Artist of violin at the Alameda String Academy, which she created out of a desire to help others experience the satisfaction that comes from making music with others, to pave sustainable pathways for music and the arts in a modern community, and, most importantly, to change the world with beauty. She lives in Alameda with her husband, their two young daughters, and fluffy white dog, Ollie.

Lucas Chen—Cello
Bay Area cellist Lucas Chen received his B.A. from UC Davis. He received his Masters Degree and Postgraduate diploma from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studying with Jennifer Culp. He has served as mentor and coach for The Oakland Youth Orchestra and Summer Music West, and is principal cellist of the Bear Valley Music Festival. Equally passionate about mainstream music, Lucas has performed/recording with such artists as Death Cab for Cutie, Sting, Train, The Trans Siberian Orchestra, Quartet San Francisco, Hillary Hahn, and for numerous movie and video game soundtracks. In addition to being a resident teaching artist at Alameda String Academy, Lucas is the music teacher/director at Northcreek Academy in Walnut Creek, where he lives with his wife, Mai, their cat, Gizmo and dog, Waffles.

Ian Scarfe—Piano
Ian Scarfe enjoys a busy career as a piano soloist, collaborative pianist, and chamber musician. Based in California, he performs regularly around the entire San Francisco Bay-Area, from Napa and Sonoma Valleys in the north, to Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay in the south. An enthusiastic performer, some of his over one-hundred concerts each year bring him across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Recent highlights include the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Alaska, and annual tours in Switzerland with the Zurich Mozart Trio. Ian is the founder and director of the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival, which presents annual retreats and concert tours for dozens of musicians from around the world. Based in “North State” California's scenic Trinity County, the home of the Trinity Alps Wilderness, the festival has given over 130 concerts in its five-year existence, including educational performances at dozens of local schools and summer camps.
