Albany Consort Albany Consort collaborates with Cologne University Choir

As part of Cologne University Choir's March California tour, the group is visiting the Bay Area for a few days of collaboration with local ensembles including the Peninsula's Albany Consort. Choir director Michael Ostrzyga and Consort harpsichordist Jonathan Salzedo started discussing this possibility soon after they met performing together in San Diego last Spring. In recognition of Bach's Birthday, the musicians will delight the ears with Bach's brilliant and beautiful motet "Jesu, Meine Freude" and Bach's D Major Harpsichord Concerto. The program also includes stunning works by Hildegard, Brahms and Shawn Kirchner.

The Collegium Musicum Chamber Choir brings together Cologne University students and alumni. They perform throughout Germany and have given TV appearances, toured Prague, Milan, New York and Boston, and provided the sound track for a documentary film about John Calvin. Director Michael Ostrzga also conducts Cologne University's other major ensembles, and is a composer, pianist and frequent international guest conductor.

The Albany Consort was founded in London in 1974, and has been a fixture of Bay Area music making since 1982. The group enjoys a refreshing "what if ..." approach to performing old music. This season's program also includes Esther by C G Lidarti, the only opera in Hebrew from the 18th century, and a Handel Festival production with San Francisco's Black Box Baroque. Harpsichordist Jonathan Salzedo started the group when he finished college, and is amazed that he has not run of ideas that he wants to try out with other willing musicians.
