St. Paul Oratorio op. 36

Berkeley Community Chorus & Orchestra

Berkeley Community Chorus & Orchestra St. Paul Oratorio op. 36

Ming Luke leads the Berkeley Community Chorus & Orchestra (BCCO) in performance of St. Paul op. 36 at Hertz Hall on the U.C. Berkeley campus on Friday June 22 at 8 pm, Saturday June 23 and Sunday June 24 at 3 pm. The soloists, Yoon Geong Lee, soprano, Katherine Trimble, mezzo-soprano, Derek Jackenheimer, tenor, and Andre Chiang, bass, are all winners in BCCO’s Vocal Soloist Competition. As music director Ming says, “The St. Paul oratorio is one of the great masterworks which has somehow fallen out of favor as choruses perform the Elijah more frequently.” Ming further says, “Modelled after the Bach Passions, St. Paul is just as powerful and beautiful as Elijah.” The instrumental Overture introduces the beautiful chorale “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme”, which is sung in toto in no. 16 when Paul’s eyes are opened to the risen Christ. Through soulful arias over colorful instrumentation the 45 part oratorio expresses a spectrum of religious feeling from doubt to radiant faith. With clear, fluent counterpoint Mendelssohn demonstrates sophisticated musicality. The powerful piece ends in a soaring double fugue. Come enjoy this rarely performed masterpiece in a free concert from Berkeley's redoubtable community chorus.
