What Makes It Great? Beethoven's Appassionata Sonata

Presented by Classical Music Communications

On September 21 at 7 pm (EDT), Orli Shaham performs Beethoven's 'Appassionata' Sonata, and joins NPR & PBS music commentator, conductor, composer, author and pianist Rob Kapilow for a deep-dive into Beethoven's iconic work for piano. Presented by Kaufman Music Center and filmed at Merkin Hall, this online performance streams on September 21 at 7 pm. The concert is available to view for 48-hours after the performance. Tickets are $15. In Beethoven’s time, the 'Appassionata' Sonata was an incredibly radical, cutting-edge, avant-garde work that left most listeners baffled, dazed and confused, yet today the piece has become completely acceptable, mainstream concert fare. How did this wildly radical music get domesticated, and can we rehear this piece as the wildly revolutionary work it was for Beethoven’s contemporaries?
