Rebecca Clark: Pioneer of Women in Music

Community Concerts at Epworth ~ "Joy and Wonder of Music"

Community Concerts at Epworth ~

Born in Victorian England, violist and composer Rebecca Clarke not only has the distinction of being one of the first women in a professional orchestra, but also a woman composer from the early part of Twentieth century whose music has endured the test of time.

Sometimes publishing under a pseudonym and often facing doubt from the public and critics whether a woman could write such works, Clarke has broken a few glass ceilings and paved the way for future women in music. We will explore Clarke’s viola sonata (1919) and piano trio (1921) on this program, written during the most prolific time of her illustrious career.

Community Concerts at Epworth brings high quality concerts of diverse styles and genres to the North Berkeley area in an accessible format. The concerts are free of charge so that all can have access to great music. Donations support local organizations and special community performances.
