Presented by Community Concerts at Epworth

Ari is a Korean word with several meanings: big river, wisdom and beauty. Ensemble Ari is an accomplished group of Korean American musicians in the Bay Area who share these attributes through musical performance. Together with Director/Composer Jean Ahn, their mission is to bridge communities using western instruments, while honoring Korean history and culture.

In this program Ensemble Ari collaborates with Sooyeon Lyuh, master of the Korean two-stringed instrument, haeguem. Together they explore Korean traditional music, contemporary music by two Korean composers, and an arrangement of a western song cycle. The program concludes with a Dvořák piano quintet, from a composer also noted for incorporating elements from cultural traditions.

Ensemble Ari's performance epitomizes the theme of Community Concerts' 5th Season, Building Bridges, by exploring how classical music can link performers, listeners, and cultures in a shared, intimate experience.

Community Concerts at Epworth brings high quality performances of diverse styles and genres to our North Berkeley neighborhood in an accessible format. Concerts are about an hour in length and are presented without charge so that all can have access to great music.

The concert series is a community service of Epworth United Methodist Church of Berkeley, a Reconciling Congregation committed to justice for all people.
