Mise en abyme

Earplay Mise en abyme

Featuring an array of adventurous new chamber music works, Earplay’s opening concert of Season 34 takes its title from a French phrase that translates roughly to “image within an image.” Mise en abyme is an excursion through the sweeping and sonorous landscape of Stephen Blumberg’s Aura, a trio for bass clarinet, cello and piano; the deft melding of classical Korean aesthetics and western playing of Hi-Kyung Kim’s world premiere Untamed Brush I for solo viola; the evocative sound world of Patricia Allessandrini’s Hommage à Purcell (2014 Aird Prize Finalist); Charles Nichols’ world premiere Flutter, Pulse and Flight for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and electronics; and, the microtonal and multiphonic sound that can be heard throughout Tristan Murail’s Paludes for non-traditional quintet – one of Earplay’s signature formats. Murail, selected to be Earplay’s featured composer for Season 34, co-founded Ensemble L'Itineraire with a group of young composers and instrumentalists in 1973, which quickly gained wide recognition for its fundamental research in the area of instrumental performance and live electronics. Conducted by Mary Chun, the core ensemble features Terrie Baune (violin), Ellen Ruth Rose (viola), Thalia Moore (cello), Tod Brody (flute), Peter Josheff (clarinet), and Brenda Tom (piano).
