Earplay Windrose Lines

Windrose Lines, Earplay’s final Home Season concert of 2019, connects two important pieces from the 1970s – Tristan Murail’s 1978 seminal "Treize Couleurs du soleil couchant" for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and acoustic-enhancing electronics, and the recently departed Olly Wilson’s 1976 "Piano Trio"—with a world premiere and a West Coast premiere of recent pieces by young composers Kyle Hovatter and Xinyan Li. Hovatter’s "Flowers by the sea" for flute, viola, and cello is inspired by William Carlos William’s short poem of the same name, while the west coast premiere of Li’s "The Dunhuang Lovers" for flute, cello, and pipa, will feature Shenshen Zhang, who has previously collaborated with Earplay as a member of Melody of China.

If the two pieces from the 1970’s reflect on the modernism of their forbears in quite different ways, the two new pieces have interesting, divergent, and moving things to say about the quest for meaning and authenticity in our own day.

Conducted by Mary Chun, the core ensemble is Terrie Baune (violin), Ellen Ruth Rose (viola), Thalia Moore (cello), Tod Brody (flute), Peter Josheff (clarinet), and Brenda Tom (piano). The ensemble will be joined by Shenshen Zhang (pipa). More information and tickets can be found at www.earplay.org.
