The award winning Gold Coast Chamber Players celebrate 20 years of bringing the finest in chamber music to Lafayette at 7:30 PM on September 14, 2019, at the Lafayette Library Community Hall, 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd. For this landmark event, legendary violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky is featured with GCCP for his only Bay Area performances this year. Following the performance, patrons are invited to an Opening Night reception at the new pop-up art gallery, JPG@thebank, 3525 Mt. Diablo Blvd. The program repeats at 4 PM on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at the Piedmont Center for the Arts, 801 Magnolia Ave. in Piedmont. Musicologist Kai Christiansen provides a pre-concert talk 30 minutes prior to each performance.

This opening program, ‘Sitkovetsky Plays Schumann’, is the first of five offered in the Gold Coast Chamber Players’ 20th Anniversary Season. An immersion into the passionate chamber music of Robert Schumann, this program features an all-star cast of leading musicians from around the globe. A renaissance man and a magnetic creative force, violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky has made a considerable impact on every aspect of musical life and has been successful as performer, creator, and facilitator for over four decades. Joining Sitkovetsky, and back by popular demand, Italian cellist Luigi Piovano brings his signature warmth and communication style to the performance. Pianist Bernadene Blaha, a GCCP regular, faculty member at University of Southern California and internationally acclaimed chamber musician, dazzles with both her virtuosity and sensitivity. GCCP violist Pamela Freund-Striplen joins with her vibrant music-making and dynamic Italian violinist Grazia Raimondi makes her Gold Coast debut.

‘Sitkovetsky Plays Schumann’ features music from over a nine year period of tremendous creativity. Schumann’s brilliance and imagination is on full display with his passionate Violin Sonata No. 1 in A minor, Op 105; poetic Fantasiestücke, Op. 73 for Cello and Piano; and Piano Quintet, Op. 44, considered one of his finest compositions and a major work of nineteenth-century chamber music.
