Presented by Lyric Theatre of San Jose

LYRIC THEATRE, in our 45th year of high quality live musical theater productions, offers a rarely-heard gem, "Thespis, or the Gods Grown Old" by WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, their first collaboration. Since most of the original music was lost, we are presenting a version with music written by Bruce Montgomery in a Sullivan-like style. Two of Sullivan's original songs were retained.

Semi-staged, with singers selected by audition, full orchestra and subtitles.

Synopsis: an acting troupe (headed by Thespis, the legendary Greek father of the drama) temporarily trade places with the elderly gods on Mount Olympus. The actors turn out to be comically inept rulers and the gods must restore order.
