Margaret Jenkins Dance Company 43rd Home Season
October 12 - 14, 2017 at 8pm
Margaret Jenkins Dance Company (MJDC) celebrates its 43rd season with the World Premiere of "Skies Calling Skies Falling," created in collaboration with the seven MJDC dancers, video artists David and Hi-Jin Hodge, poet Michael Palmer, lighting designer David Robertson, costume designer Mary Domenico, and original music by Thomas Carnacki with additional music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alva Noto and Max Richter. A new version of "Site Series (Inside Outside)," which premiered in 2015, will also be performed. Performances are Thursday through Saturday, October 12, 13, and 14 at 8 p.m. in the newly renovated Diane B. Wilsey Center in the SF War Memorial Building.
The evening opens with a re-imagined version of the intimate and evocative "Site Series (Inside Outside)" beginning in the Education Studio, a large open space, with the audience seated in the round. Since its inception, "Site Series" has been performed in people's living rooms, galleries, clubs, wineries and most recently in Sweden at multiple venues. Each performance, each new setting, has shifted its meaning, its purpose and its modes of reception. The narrative threaded throughout the work is by poet Michael Palmer. The music for "Site Series" is by David Lang, Joan Jeanrenaud, Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita, and Steve Reich.
The second half of the evening features the World Premiere of "Skies Calling Skies Falling" which uses shock - the physical, emotional and intellectual embodiment of this state - as its central metaphor. The work is designed specifically for the 276-seat Taube Atrium Theater at the Wilsey Center with its expansive floor space and vaulted ceilings. "Skies Calling Skies Falling" is comprised of dance, narrative shards, a musical landscape of both found and composed elements, and drone video of the Company, creating an explosive, questioning, kinetic and hopeful landscape.
