Oakland Symphony Presents A Celebration of Bernard Tyson
“The Oakland Symphony is shocked and saddened by the passing of Bernard Tyson on November 10, 2019. He was a long-time supporter of the Oakland Symphony and a champion for the arts and art education in the Bay Area.
The Symphony is scheduled to present his chosen “Playlist” of the songs and music that inspired him, and will be a celebration of his life and legacy.”
The Oakland Symphony launched "Playlist" in 2018 to give listeners unique insights into a selected curator’s passions and take audiences on a musical journey to unexpected and unchartered territories. The first Playlist featured the curated musical selections of W. Kamau Bell, the socio-political comedian, activist, and Emmy-winning CNN host. The second "Playlist" in 2019 featured Dolores Huerta, the Mexican-American labor leader and civil rights activist who, with Cesar Chavez, co-founded the United Farm Workers. She coined the phrase Sí, Se Puede/Yes, We Can. President Obama honored her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
Bernard Tyson was in discussions about the selections for his "Playlist" with Oakland Symphony's Music Director Michael Morgan two days before his death. The Symphony with special guests will present these selections.
