San Francisco Opera Guild, Peninsula Chapter Opera Preview Lecture for John Adams's Girls of the Golden West

Dr. Kip Cranna, San Francisco Opera’s Dramaturg and one of our popular speakers, will guide us through this exciting John Adams-Peter Sellars world premiere, which will clearly be nothing like Puccini’s Girl of the Golden West< /b>< /i>! Adams and Sellars, “the team behind < b>< i>Doctor Atomic< /b>< /i> and < i>Nixon in China< /b>< /i>,” will weave a different tale, one of – to quote SFO’s 2017-18 season booklet: “the unsung pioneers of the Gold Rush in their own words.” We’ll meet four very different ‘49ers: a Chinese immigrant and prostitute, a black violin-playing cowboy and former slave, a young Mexican barmaid, and an East Coast matron who (among other activities?) chronicles their stories. Will it be as wild as the wild west itself? Come and see for yourself!

San Francisco Opera Previews are 90-minute lectures, accessible to all levels of experience, which are illustrated with musical clips, photographs and -- usually! -- video. Questions from our audience members may extend the ending time a bit!

We meet in the freestanding Chapel -- beside the playground! -- of Palo Alto's 1st Presbyterian Church which is located at 1140 Cowper between Kingsley and Lincoln. Admission, payable only at the door, is $10/person. There are no tickets, and no reservations.
