Sierra Chamber Society 32nd Season Program IV Featuring Classical Guitarist Paul Galbraith

Sierra Chamber Society 32nd Season Program IV Featuring Classical Guitarist Paul Galbraith

The Sierra Chamber Society is pleased to announce the 4th program in its 32nd concert season on Sunday March 10, 2019 at 3 PM at its customary venue, Grace Presbyterian Church, 2100 Tice Valley Blvd, Walnut Creek, CA 94596 (a block East of the Rossmoor Parkway intersection with Tice Valley Blvd).
In addition to distinguished members of the SF Symphony this unusual program features internationally renowned classical guitarist Paul Galbraith who performs on an 8-string "Brahms" guitar created for him. Mr. Galbraith is especially celebrated for his incomparable, virtuosic performances of transcriptions of classical and romantic literature, in particular works by Haydn and Mozart. A survey of YouTube offerings by Mr. Galbraith and his diverse discography will quickly reveal why this is such a special musical occasion in the Bay Area. Mr. Galbraith will perform his own arrangements of WA Mozart's Allemande from his Baroque Suite, K. 399 and the complete Piano Sonata in B-flat major, K. 570. He will then play his own arrangement of six of Scriabin's wonderful Preludes, concluding with Isaac Albéniz's Sevilla from his Suite Española, Op. 47. The program includes Haydn's charming String Quartet No 40 in G major, Op. 76 No. 1, "Emporer" with the famous variations on "God protect Emporer Franz," and concludes with Bohuslav Martinu's remarkable Quartet for Piano and Strings No. 1 which draws on both Czech folk music and American Jazz. The Sierra Chamber Society concludes its 32nd season on May 5 with a guest appearance by the Telegraph String Quartet, winners of the 2017 International Naumburg Competition. The TSQ will perform Mieczyslaw Weinberg's String Quartet No. 6, Antonin Dvorak's "Cypresses" and Beethoven's rarely heard masterpiece, his String Quartet in B flat, Op. 130 with the original "Grosse Fuge" finale. Seats to these performances are limited. Online pre-purchase is strongly advised.
