Music of the Empires: Music of the Ottoman and Mali Empires

The Ottoman Empire controlled much of Southeastern Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa between the 14th and early 20th centuries. The Mali Empire ruled in Western Africa from c. 1235 to 1670. Both empires produced incredible art and music. In this class we will learn pieces from both empires, focusing on the melodies, scales and stylistic features of the repertoire.
