The Temescal String Quartet was begun in 2004 by musicians of the San Francisco Opera and Ballet Orchestras. Founding members Barbara Riccardi, Katherine Button, and Jonna Hervig were joined by cellist Nancy Bien in 2015. They are well known performers throughout the greater Bay Area. Their energetic TSQ performances resonate with the joy of playing chamber music together.
Violinist BARBARA RICCARDI is a native of New York. After graduating from Vassar College, she became a private student of Arnold Steinhardt of the Guarneri Quartet. Soon after joining the San Francisco Symphony, Barbara discovered a deeper source of inspiration from the great vocal masters of the opera. She has played with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra for 43 seasons to date. She is also an avid chamber musician, performing throughout the Bay Area.
Violinist KATHRINE BUTTON graduated from Stanford University with Distinction and Honors in Music. She also studied at Mills College with Colin Hampton, cellist with the Griller Quartet; the Royal College of Music in London, England; and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. While still a student at Stanford, Katie joined the San Jose Symphony, becoming Assistant Concertmaster the following year. She performed for many years with the San Francisco Ballet orchestra, and is a highly sought after freelance musician throughout the bay area.
Violist JONNA HERVIG was born in Iowa City, Iowa, where she began studying viola with William Preucil of the Stradivari Quartet. From there she went to New York City, where she studied with Lillian Fuchs at Manhattan Schoolof Music and William Lincer at the Juilliard School. She also studied chamber music with the Lennox String Quartet, Julliard Quartet, and the Guarneri Quartet. Jonna now lives in Oakland, and has been a member of the San Francisco Opera orchestra for many years.
Cellist NANCY BIEN began her music studies in the California public schools. After getting both a BA and an MA in music (performance), she played and taught on the East Coast for a few years, but longed to return to California. In 1980 she quit her full time symphony job and moved back to San Francisco. She is a busy performer on the “freeway philharmonic” circuit, and also is the cellist with Resonance Jazz Ensemble, a Bay Area jazz octet.
