Experience a special musical event when concert pianist Daniel Glover performs “Concertos Without Orchestra,” a collection of piano solo transcriptions of excerpts from five well-known and beloved concertos from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and early 20th Century periods. Valley Concert Chorale hosts the event that is both entertaining and educational as Mr. Glover shares the history and analysis of each piece he performs. Event details are as follows:

“The transcribers of the concertos are as well-known as the original composers,” says Glover, “but what is surprising to the listener is the transcribers’ uncanny ability to synthesize the parts of a full symphony orchestra, as well as the solo piano (or two violins), into one unified whole.”
The program begins with an unusual “double” transcription of Vivaldi’s Concerto in A Minor for Two Violins, a work Johann Sebastian Bach transcribed for organ. “Russian pianist Samuil Feinberg then made a piano solo version in the 1920s based on both previous versions,” he adds
The program also features Russian composer Balakirev who transcribed the warmly expressive and elegant “Romance” from Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor; and Charles Valentin Alkan’s clever solo version of the first movement from Beethoven’s iconic Third Concerto that humorously quotes from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. The concert concludes with Ravel’s “Adagio” from his G Major Concerto and the complete Concerto No. 2 in G Minor of Saint-Saëns in a brilliantly effective transcription by Georges Bizet, the composer of the opera Carmen.

About Mr. Glover
Pianist Daniel Glover, who has been the Valley Concert Chorale’s accompanist since 1998, performed 65 works for piano and orchestra, including three world premieres. He recently recorded Lee Actor’s Piano Concerto, a work dedicated to him, in Bratislava, Slovakia with the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared as soloist with nearly 20 local orchestras, as well as the Szeged Philharmonic (Hungary), Slovak National Symphony Orchestra, as well as members of the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony and San Francisco Symphony. Daniel Glover has served on the faculties of New York University, University of the Virgin Islands, University of San Francisco, and Notre Dame de Namur University. Glover has performed in 42 states and 27 countries throughout Europe, Asia, North/South America and the Caribbean.
The San Francisco Classical Voice said of Glover, “Brilliant, tender, whimsical, sparkling, Glover brought everything together into a well-balanced, evenly measured medium. Dazzling, golly can he play! Mr. Glover has trained with such luminaries as Eugene List, Abbey Simon, Jerome Lowenthal, Nancy Bachus and Thomas LaRatta. He holds a master’s degree from the Juilliard School, where he was a scholarship student. He has recorded ten CDs, which have been broadcast on radio stations in Israel, Argentina, Germany, Canada, and the United States. His most recent recording is “Great Transcriptions by Legendary Pianists” (2015). He recently became a published author and editor for Dover editions, including the two piano edition of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 3.
