The Bay Area is home to literally hundreds of classical music organizations, from community choruses to world-renowned orchestras, opera companies and chamber ensembles. The concert series offers a good bit of jazz, along with classical music, world and ethnic music, new and experimental music, and the occasional unclassifiable offering. Performances often featuring local musicians, but they do get touring acts and people who come from around the country (indeed, around the world) especially to play at the Club.
HIP Forum specializes in period performance of Baroque and Classical repertoire, with a special emphasis on music for winds and keyboards.
Hocket is Robby Stafford (leader), Scot Stafford, Celeste Winant, Shira Kammen and David Kurtenbach. Hocket brings to life both Ars Nova and Ars Subtilior from the 14th-15th centuries and focuses in particular on the sacred and secular works of Guillaume de Machaut.
The Undergraduate program offers programs for performance and general music majors. The Graduate program offers three music education degrees in music education with Kodály emphasis.
Serving the Bay Area since 1983, Humanities West Explores History and Celebrates the Arts through time and across the globe, bringing illuminating lectures and dynamic performances that focus on the people, places, and events that have shaped, and still inform, modern cultures. Each season Humanities West presents a number of programs in which leading scholars, musicians, and artists present lectures, performances, readings and discussions to audiences in San Francisco’s Marines’ Memorial Theatre. These one- or two-day events represent an opportunity unique not only to the Bay Area, but also to the entire United States.
